About

Born in France in 1986, Simon Sieger is a pianist, trombonist, tubist, arranger and composer. He has been exploring music in creative ways since 2004. He learned his trade with his father, Pascal Sieger, a saxophone player inspired by the jazz musicians of the creative music scene of the eighties, as well as the great jazz classics. Simon learned the jazz piano and trombone without any formal education until he entered the Conservatoire of Marseille at age 21, under the pressure of fellow musicians. The institution refused to give him his degree when he presented his final exam playing solo piano inspired by the music of Sun Ra and Cecil Taylor. After presenting the same kind of music the next year, he was given his degree only because Famoudou Don Moye was called into the jury.

After this point, Great Black Music became his main point of interest. He also explored into non-western music (african, turkish, azeri and uyghur) with the hope of deconstructing his western approach. Simon Sieger remains an interpret and follower of the way of the Great Black Music, his melodic and structural approach are inherited from the tradition of the great explorers like Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Hassan Ibn Ali, Elmo Hope, the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In his own words, « The ways in and out of groove, improvising or composing can only be found in the collective practice and thriving for another world in a collective momentum ».

Simon Sieger played in many different bands (among which the Attica Blues Band with Archie Shepp and Odyssey and Legacy with Famoudou Don Moye) and toured in Europe and abroad as a sideman and leading his own trio, OUAT. He has been playing with Famoudou Don Moye since 2015, with the Art Ensemble of Chicago since 2019, and with Moor Mother since 2023. He is also active in the creative jazz scene of Berlin, and has established a partnership with the Berlin Jazz Fest. Important collaborations include Sven Ake Johanssonn, Hamid Drake, Roscoe Mitchell, Mats Gustafsson, Joel Grip, Tristan Honsinger, Camille Emaille, Rudi Mahall, Eda Er, Michael Griener, Abel Selaocoe, and Axel Dörner.
